A levels were introduced in the UK in 1951 and replaced the existing Higher School Certificate, or HSC. Then, as of now, they were widely regarded as a well-respected qualification and a way of evaluating a candidate’s application and suitability for higher education. Each year saw an increasing number of teenagers taking at least one A level and the system remained much the same until 2000, when it was suggested that five or six A levels should be taken, instead of three or four. Another change meant that A levels now comprise six modules, studied over a two-year period.

On average, seven students are competing for one place at their preferred university, making A levels London and in other parts of the UK extremely important. In fact, the pass rate for A levels in general, is around 95 percent, making it even more important to pass with as high a score as possible.
